General Tips for the Fall
Fall is a great time to get your air ducts cleaned. Check you vents in your rooms to see if there is discoloring aound them. If so, your ducts need to be professionally cleaned by a heating and air conditioning professional.
Help conserve water and energy this fall! In spite of the recent rains, the Georgetown area is still considered to be in a drought and is in a level 2 water restriction area. Chisholm Trail Utility District is now in a level 3. Be sure you check to see what your restrictions are for your area and when you can run your sprinklers.
Fall is the time to inspect the attic for ample insulation and leak stains. If you need additional insulation or leaks, fall is definitely the time to take care of both of the problems to make sure your home does not use excessive energy this winter or the leak does not turn into a disaster during the worst part of the year.
Gutters need to be cleaned out and repaired? Get it done before the cold weather hits this year. We can also add gutter guards to keep out leaves.
As the days get cooler and your heater kicks into gear, set your thermostats down to 70 and reverse the ceiling fans. Turn down the thermostat lower when you are going to be gone for long periods of time. If you have a hot water heater, be sure you wrap it in an insulating cover.
Fall is the best time to check for leaks around windows and doors. A good way to do it is to use incense. With the stick smoldering, move it toward the edges of windows and doors. If there is a draft, the smoke will be blown horizontally. No draft, and the smoke rises normally. If you have caulk that is old and cracked, it needs to be removed and replaced.
Change out your old style light bulbs to flourescent bulbs. Keep the old style bulbs for the lights you use to read. You can not use a flourescent bulb if you have a dimmer switch.
When you are leaving for vacation, don't forget to turn off your hot water heaters! You don't want to return to a watery mess in your home, and it will help lower your utility bill while you are are gone.
Giving Back to the Community
We are proud members of the Assistance League® of Georgetown Area. This nonprofit organization gives back to the community through their programs of Reading & More, Operation School Bell, and New Friends.
To fund these programs the ALGA operates a thrift shop at 603 West University in Georgetown Tuesday through Saturday. Donations of gently used clothing, household goods, and furniture are gladly accepted.
They also accept monetary donations to help with Operation School Bell. At the beginning of the school year they strive to clothe and provide a pair of shoes for the low income children from Georgetown, Florence, and Jarrell who are referred by their school counselors. If you can help, please contact them.
And of course, they welcome new volunteers!
